Dallas Cowboys win season’s first exhibition over Miami

CANTON, Ohio – Rookie Devonte Holloman’s 75-yard interception return with a tipped pass keyed the Dallas Cowboys’ 24-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins in the Hall of Fame Game on Sunday night that opened the league’s exhibition season.
The sixth-round draft pick from South Carolina was perfectly situated when rookie receiver Chad Bumphis had Matt Moore’s pass go off his hands in the second quarter. It was the biggest play for a Dallas defense switching to a 4-3 alignment under new coordinator Monte Kiffin.
Of making a big play, Holloman said, “I thought about it the whole way here and it actually happened.”
The Cowboys controlled most of the game one night after their former offensive lineman, Larry Allen, and former coach, Bill Parcells, were inducted into the Hall.
Quarterback Tony Romo, coming off back surgery to remove a cyst, sat out for Dallas. So the Cowboys turned to their ground game — and ground down Miami as few regulars got onto the field.
Linebacker Holloman sped toward the end zone with a group of blockers escorting him, and after he scored he tightly clutched the ball as he headed to the Dallas sideline.
Bumphis otherwise had a strong game, with five receptions for 85 yards.
But Miami’s mistakes were decisive. The Dolphins struggled most of the night against Dallas’ new defense masterminded by Kiffin, the man who designed the popular Tampa 2 scheme.
“I thought we’d play better,” Miami coach Joe Philbin said.
Although top runner DeMarco Murray was held out, the Cowboys rushed for 170 yards — including 70 by Joseph Randle and 59 by Phillip Tanner.
Eagles’ Cooper gets threats
PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia Eagles receiver Riley Cooper has been sent threatening messages after a video of him making a racial slur became public.
Team officials said Cooper informed them of the threats and did not know who made them. The Eagles notified the league’s security department.
Cooper was fined by the Eagles after his slur became known Wednesday. He left the team Friday to seek counseling.
“Riley Cooper made us aware of the tweets when the video became public,” a team statement said.
The video of Cooper was taken at a Kenny Chesney concert in June. Cooper apologized Wednesday and Thursday.
