This post discusses last night's episode of True Blood, so you may want to skip it if you haven't watched!
One of my favorite signs of summer is the start of a new season of True Blood.
Though last season had its low points (i.e. Terry's Iraq subplot, Sam and Luna's shifter romance), I loved the finale, in which Bill drank the blood of Lilith and was resurrected as, well, "Billith."
Last night's episode picked up exactly where it left off, as Eric and Sookie ran from what Jason called the "naked evil Superman." I think True Blood is at its best when as many characters team up as possible, so I dug the caravan of Sookie's Scoobies that rolled off into the night.
Also a plus, if you ask me: Luna is now out of the picture, with Sam left to raise her cub. And so far Andy's daddy subplot looks intriguing, considering his litter of fairy daughters is growing at a mad pace.
As we could tell from the trailers, this season will focus on the war between humans and vamps, led by yet another menacing Governor. I'd say this is one of the best and most plausible "Big Bads" we've seen in several seasons; I can get much more excited about this bloody standoff than I ever could about crazy Marnie.
My main criticism of the episode is that, despite werewolf threesomes, fairies, etc., the tone felt a little off to me. A big part of what makes True Blood so enjoyable is that it embraces camp to the fullest, and this ep didn't seem to get the memo. (It was also a super-dark episode — and I mean that literally. The entire thing took place over the course of one very black night.)
What did you think of the premiere? Do you have high hopes for Season 6, or are you growing tired of Sookie Stackhouse? Holler in the comments
