Even as Delhi University prepares to make revolutionary changes in
its curriculum with the four-year undergraduate programme, its
prominence in educational stakes remains undisputed.
According to the latest India Today-Nielsen Best Colleges survey, which has emerged as the country's most reliable guide to the best in higher education since its inception in 1997, the number one ranked colleges in science, arts and commerce are all from DU.

Significantly, five of the top 10 colleges nationwide in arts and science are from DU, as are four of the top 10 colleges in commerce. In fact, the national Capital has beaten the rest of the country in three other streams as well - AIIMS, IIT-Delhi and NIFT-Delhi have been ranked the best in medicine, engineering and fashion, respectively.

The survey ranks the country's top colleges in 11 streams - arts, commerce, science, engineering, medicine, law, fine arts, BCA, BBA, mass communication and fashion.Shortlisting A list of over 1,500 colleges was drawn up by The Nielsen Company in 11 disciplines. For arts, science and commerce, colleges in 13 major cities - Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai and Pune - were considered.
Step 2: National Perceptual Ranking Various academic experts, deans and principals from across India were administered a structured questionnaire and asked to distribute 100 points across five parameters - reputation of colleges, quality of academic input, student care, infrastructure and job prospects - for each college. To eliminate bias, the experts were asked not to rate their own college. The results were used to determine the overall perceptual score of each college.
Step 3: Factual Ranking Based on the perceptual scores, the top 50 colleges in arts, science and commerce, the top 25 in engineering, medicine and law and the top 10 in BBA, BCA, mass communication & journalism, fashion and fine arts were contacted for factual data.
Each college was asked to fill a questionnaire stating its achievements in each parameter and providing relevant evidence for the same. Colleges that declined were not considered.
Step 4: Final overall rankings The final rankings were calculated by combining the perceptual scores and factual scores with a weightage of 50:50.
