A Milwaukee festival ended Wednesday with several arrests, authorities said.
Milwaukee police sources told 12 News there were several arrests at Wednesday's Juneteenth celebrations at the Martin Luther King Center, but would not go into further detail about the incidents. The arrests were made as the festival was winding down, authorities said.
McArthur Weddle, president of Juneteenth Milwaukee, told 12 News their efforts to partner with the Milwaukee Police Department have made a huge difference for people's safety.
"We work with the police department very closely. We want to be visible, we want the people in the community to know who's there, who's protecting and serving them alongside the MPD, and we have volunteer security that's also there to protect and serve," said Weddle.
Weddle said every year, his group of security volunteers wears a different, brightly-colored shirt to stand out in the crowd so people can easily spot them if there is a problem. Weddle said he was aware of the arrests, but overall, the majority of families in attendance had a wonderful time.
"We know there's been some violence and things that have happened, but we saw today that we can come together and get along with one another, and we don't have to deal with this nonsense that's been happening in our community," said Weddle.
Those who attended the event said it was a great day to celebrate the city of Milwaukee and look forward to summer.
"It was just like normal, everybody had a good time, there were some incidents going on here and there, but overall it turned out really nice, it really did," said Yuwanda Gibson, of Milwaukee.
Organizers said Juneteenth is one of the several upcoming events they hope will build community partnerships throughout the city, so everyone enjoys a safe summer.
