Shailene Woodley’s Role Cut Amazing Spider-Man 2

Shailene Woodley’s acting career is on fire, but she won’t be seen in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ Despite filming scenes as the major love interest for Spider-Man, the actress’ role as Mary Jane Watson won’t be seen until 2016.

Shailene Woodley, best known for her role as Amy Juergens on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, won’t be featured in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Even though she filmed scenes for her role as Mary Jane Watson, the role was cut until the third film, due in 2016.

Shailene Woodley’s Role Pushed Back In ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′

The Golden Globe nominee filmed her scenes as Mary Jane Watson, one of Peter Parker’s main love interests, in February. She even dyed her hair red for the role!
According to HollywoodLife.com’s sister site Deadline, her role was pushed to the third film so that the 2014 sequel can focus on Peter Parker’s (Andrew Garfield) relationship with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone).
Shailene, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, understood the creative reasons for why her role was cut from the second film:

Of course I’m bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason… Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film.

Shailene’s Already Busy Film Schedule

Even though her character won’t be seen in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, that doesn’t mean we won’t be seeing any less of Shailene on the big screen.
She is co-starring with 21 and Over’s Miles Teller in the Sundance hit The Spectacular Now, due for an August 2nd release. She is currently filming Divergent, based on the young-adult bestselling novels. Shailene also nabbed the highly sought-after lead in the adaptation of another young-adult novel, The Fault in Our Stars.
It’s safe to say that the next few years are going to produce huge hits for Shailene. We loved her on Secret Life and we can’t wait to see what else she has in store for the big screen.
