India
have been blessed with some attacking openers over the last three
decades. If Krishnamachari Srikkanth started the trend in the 1980s with
his swashbuckling style, it was Virender Sehwag who took over the mantle in the 2000s.
And now, the baton has passed to Shikhar Dhawan.
Dhawan still has some distance to go before he can be compared with Sehwag, but there's no denying the fact that he is on his way. After a record-breaking Test debut against Australia, he has now scored two back-to-back centuries in the Champions Trophy, and in both cases, it was less than run-a-ball.
It's not that Dhawan is taking unnecessary risks, but he is doing what Sehwag had done so well in the last decade. His power-packed batting is taking the pressure off the middle-order and that's why the likes of Dinesh Karthik and Virat Kohli are getting some breathing space.
The other good thing about Dhawan is his temperament. Once he gets in, he is looking to finish the innings, and that's helping the Indian team. "Dhawan played quite brilliantly today. He set up the platform for the chase," MS Dhoni said after India's win against West Indies on Tuesday.
Sourav Ganguly, too, looks mighty impressed with Dhawan's progress. "The best thing about Dhawan is that he is fearless," Ganguly said. This fearlessness was the hallmark of Sehwag's batting and it's good to see that Dhawan is taking cue from his illustrious Delhi teammate.
