Engineering college in Sion derecognized

Around 1,200 students face an uncertain future as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) on Tuesday withdrew the approval of an engineering college in the city.

Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil Pratishthan's College of Engineering in Sion-Chunnabhatti was derecognized as it did not have its own land, said officials. The college was set up in 1990.

Earlier this week, the AICTE withdrew the approval of Manohar Phalke Memorial Foundation Polytechnic College. The college offered diploma courses and had 600 students.

Both the derecognized colleges have been removed from the option list for this year's admissions. While new admissions would not be allowed, existing students of the colleges would be transferred to nearby institutes, said an official.

"What will happen if there are no vacant seats in other colleges close to this one? Will our children be transferred to a far-off college," asked a parent.

Officials claimed that students will not be affected as the new academic year is yet to begin and students can be accommodated in other colleges.

Dayanand Meshram, joint director of the state's Directorate of Technical Education, said, "The papers of the land were not in the name of the college's trust. The third to sixth floors did not have occupancy certificate. The AICTE, therefore, derecognized the college." Earlier, the college failed to obtain an extension of approval from the AICTE. The college's trust now has the option to appeal in the court. Last year, Parshvanath College of Engineering in Thane also had to shut shop for a similar violation of norms. The college had moved the court, but lost the case.

A source claimed that the college lacked several facilities such as unequipped libraries, unavailability of workshops apart from the basic necessity of having a land of their own.
