Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 2013 faces stern competition from Ford Figo

The original WagonR was Maruti Suzuki’s first car with a so called Tall Boy design, which helped the car maker in overcoming the competition from a number of other cars. Now, as the company has given it a refreshed upgrade, The WagonR 2013 is in direct competition with cars such as the Tata Indica V2 Xeta, Hyundai Santro Xing, and Chevrolet Spark in the Indian passenger car market.
On the other hand, we have Ford India Private, an owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company, which revealed its Figo facelift in the domestic market last year. Figo was the first car that drew a considerable amount of sales for this American car maker in the premium hatch segment of Indian car market. Figo facelift has direct rivals in the form of Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai i20, Chevrolet Sail U-VA among others.
The new WagonR 2013 was revamped by its maker with a lot of cosmetic changes in its interior as well as exterior. The passenger car looks more stylish as well as contemporary as compared against its predecessor. On the other hand, the Ford Figo is target for rather elite consumers and clearly outshines the facelift WagonR when it comes to interior setting, space and comfort, seating arrangement, security features and looks.
Mechanically, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR 2013 is powered by 1.0 litre, 998 cc, 3 cylinder, K-Series KB10 petrol engine. The powerful engine gives out a peak power of 67 bhp with maximum 90 Nm torque and comes with a five speed manual transmission. Maruti Suzuki asserts that the engine that powers the new WagonR delivers enhanced performance and fuel efficiency than the former.
Ford Figo is available to its consumers in both its petrol and diesel avatars. The premium car is driven by a 1.2 litre petrol engine has the capacity of 70 bhp and a maximum 102 Nm torque. Whereas, Figo’s diesel version comes with a 1.4 litre Duratorq engine with a maximum power of 68 bhp and 160 Nm of peak torque and comes with a 5 speed manual transmission.
Currently the Maruti Suzuki WagonR is available in a price range of Rs. 3.6 to Rs. 5.5 lakhs, as opposed to Ford Figo, that has a price tag of between Rs. 3.85 to Rs. 6 lakhs. Thus, it is clearly visible that the price tags of WagonR and Figo don’t really have a great gap in between. Moreover, when it comes to power and torque performance the WagonR 2013 is not competent enough to compete with Ford Figo. So, it can be easily predicted that the tech-conscious consumers and the performance aficionados would choose Figo over WagonR. Now, it’s just a wait and watch situation to see whether the Maruti Suzuki brand image wins or the performance superiority of Ford Figo
