Daayans or witches have hardly been used as subjects in Hindi movies
of late, so when the promos of Vishal Bhardwaj's Ek Thi Daayan went on
air, it created a buzz. The film's highlight was its multiple star cast —
Konkona Sen Sharma, Emraan Hashmi, Kalki Koechlin and the recent
favourite Huma Qureshi.
Unfortunately, despite all the hype, it did little to increase the BO prospects of Ekta Kapoor's co-production with Bhardwaj, and ...Daayan received an average opening.
According to Tanuj Garg, CEO, Balaji Motion Pictures, "On Friday the film collected Rs 6.24 crore, Saturday Rs 5.63 crore and Sunday Rs 6.20 crore, taking the total to Rs 18.07 crore in its opening weekend."
"The film is doing well only in metros like Mumbai and Delhi. It has only made Rs 16-17 crore on its opening weekend. There are chances of some of the distributors losing money," says trade analyst Komal Nahata.
Trade analyst Vinod Mirani blames it on the Ek Thi... team for their low performance. He says, "Saturday's BO performance was even worse than Friday. The movie suffered in single screens because of the deal they were trying to strike with single screens."
There were reports that with Balaji's Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Again (OUATMA) and UTV's Chennai Express releasing on the same day in August, Kapoor, who is distributing ...Daayan in the Mumbai circuit, was using the Hashmi starrer and her upcoming release Shootout At Wadala to pressurise theatre owners to get more screens for OUATMA. Most of the single screen owners decided to stay away from releasing the film. Rakesh Sippy, owner of Chitra, a single screen in Mumbai, who was also working with Ekta Kapoor on the distribution of Ek Thi..., said, "The film got a decent opening on Friday, it later dipped a little on Saturday and remained steady on Sunday
