The French win the day at Cannes

Are we getting cynical or is the red carpet at the 66th Cannes Film Festival a little lacklustre this year? We thought we could rely upon Emma Watson and Sonam Kapoor to bring some punk to the show, but that didn't happen. Sonam was Miss Muffet in Dolce & Gabbana. The strapless, full skirt and pumps formula is one she favours as much as others cling to column dresses. The dress was commissioned especially for her and the designers' thought process was to symbolise the golden era of the movies - the 1950s. While they saw Sonam representing it, it was neither here nor there and we really hope Sonam brings out a silk tuxedo or pant-suit soon, otherwise her fashionista reputation runs the risk of becoming the Emperor's new clothes. Emma wore a black and white Chanel gown that was sophisticated, but ho-hum. Neither the make-up, nor the accessories (there was that ear-cuff, but you can't see it unless you are whispering sweet-nothings in her ear) Chinese actor-producer-singer Fan Bingbing's Elie Saab gown made her look a bit jaundiced, and the coral lipstick was her emergency cure. It didn't uplift the look but she does get points for wearing an unusual colour to the event.

Frieda too was a little tepid in the Sanchita beaded champagne gown but she accessorised right.

French actress Sonia Rolland shook us out of our catty inertia. How often do you see a busy print on the red carpet? And you have to be very secure to wear a covered up number. The silhouette was dramatic, without being overwhelming. You know what they say about the French: Their aim is to look like the best version of themselves. Slow clap from us, Ms Roland.

Another day, another Sabyasachi for Vidya Balan. And a dive into the accessories at the House of Surana (the makers of this jewellery). You could say she should have only worn the nath, or just one necklace, but that wouldn't be the solution. At least give us different make-up, Ms Balan. We've seen how good the cat's eye and tousled hair look on you.
