“My mum would be over the moon about me doing Eurovision. My father would be in the Castle pub in Neath telling all his mates my daughter’s in the Eurovision song contest! He would be very proud.”
Grammy-nominated Bonnie is the most famous of this year’s finalists and has been mobbed since arriving in Sweden — needing a police escort at one point to get through 500 fans.
But she admitted the strain of promoting her song was starting to get to her voice — and that she was serving a self-imposed booze ban to protect it.
She said: “I am not drinking until after the contest. But when I’ve done my performance I am going to have a nice couple of glasses of red wine.
“If there is a party afterwards, I’ll be there, darling.”
Despite enjoying 80million record sales in a career spanning 30 years, Bonnie claimed she had never felt so nervous.
“This is one of the most nerve-wracking things I have ever done,” she admitted.
“Normally when I go to Europe people have bought a ticket to see Bonnie Tyler and you just go out and give everybody a great time — but this is a real contest.”
She has told bosses she must have 20 minutes to herself before singing tonight — in a bid to calm crippling nerves.
“It is crazy because I’ve been doing this all my life, but it’s still a big thing,” she continued.
“I was extremely nervous in rehearsals because there was so much going on before I got there and I was rushing about.
“What I really want is 20 minutes in my dressing room before I go on. I have got to have that space and time to calm myself down and to compose myself so I feel right and ready.”
Bonnie said she had been amazed by the standard of the rival songs. She added: “I am not saying that to make excuses but Denmark is really strong. It really is a great song. I like Germany, Russia, Ireland.”
The Brit singer, who Ladbrokes also have at 7/1 to come last and 10/1 to get the dreaded “nul points” — said: “I’d love to win.”
But she warned: “I think people realise it is not always just a song contest and it can be political and countries do vote for each other.”
Bonnie was given a boost after being drawn to sing 15th out of 26 tonight — just before hosts Sweden. Last year’s UK hope Engelbert Humperdinck went on first — meaning viewers had largely forgotten him by the time they voted. He came second to last with 12 points.
Engelbert sent Bonnie a message of support, telling her “you can do it”.
Bonnie has been accompanied to Sweden by her millionaire property developer husband Robert Sullivan, with the pair soon to celebrate their 40th anniversary. She said: “He is my biggest fan.”
Last night Denmark were the 6/4 on favourites, with Norway 11/2 and Ukraine 9/1.
