Bombay Talkies bombs at box office despite critical acclaim

Anthology film 'Bombay Talkies', a tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema, may have got rave reviews from critics but failed to excite movie goers enough, grossing just Rs 3.75 crore in its opening weekend.

The film brings on the screen four different stories put together by directors Zoya Akhtar, Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap and Dibaker Banerjee.

The film started at a little over Rs 1 crore nett on Friday, but jumped 25 per cent on Saturday. The collections rose even further on Sunday.

But according to Boxofficeindia.com, the business is so low that even if weekdays do steady business, it is irrelevant to the overall outcome of the movie. "The film is unlikely to even recover the money spent on print and advertising from theatrical business in India".

'Bombay Talkies' will now see a gala screening at the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival that begins May 15.

The movie released last week alongside animated movie 'Chhota Bheem...' and John Abraham's action packed movie 'Shootout at Wadala'. Of the three, only 'Shootout...' did well in its opening weekend earnings.

Meanwhile, the Aditya Roy Kapur-Shraddha Kapoor starrer 'Aashiqui 2' continued to do well, emerging as the first super hit so far in 2013.
