Former president APJ Abdul Kalam said social networking sites like twitter and Facebook are responsible for the biggest data explosion in the 21st century. He was speaking at the international conference on computational and data intensive science and Silver Jubilee Foundation Day celebrations of CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute on Monday, where he was the chief guest.
Though scientific advancements in biology, astronomy, earth sciences and almost every other area of science have started to create data, social networking sites are the greatest contributors to the explosion of data, Kalam said.
“Everything in the world – your energy meter at home, the refrigerators, parts of your car, your apparel, and the medical monitoring devices on your body have became part of the network. Then the Google revolution for searching everything and the GPS and map assisted navigation to guide you while you drive have come together to create what is now known as storage or data revolution,” he said.
The computer revolution created large volumes of data, and now the same data is driving new ideas and changes in computing, Kalam stated.
“When we first talked about data, it was always in quantitative numbers. But today’s data has text, speech, video—both structured and unstructured. Today’s data is characterised by volume, velocity and variety,” Kalam observed. Kalam also stressed the need for a fourth paradigm, which seeks to exploit information buried in massive datasets to drive scientific discovery.
