NASA scientists have reportedly commanded Curiosity Mars Rover to begin
its journey towards its primary destination Mount Sharp.
According to BBC, the scientists instructed Rover to take an 18 m drive on Friday and by Monday it had travelled 40 m.
The Rover had been investigating a site just east of its August 2012 touchdown point, drilling rocks and analysing their composition.
However, it is expected to take many months to reach Mount Sharp, and through the journey the intention also is to get to a specific site where satellites have indicated there are layers of sediment that were most likely laid down in water.
The Rover was put down in Mars' equatorial Gale Crater on 6 August last year with the mission to probe the crater's sediments for evidence that past environments on Mars could once have favoured microbial life, the report added.
