AEROSPACE ENGINEERING: MOST CHALLENGING HIGHTECH CAREER OPTION
The education system in India continued to be based on the colonial legacy of bureaucratic administration even after fifty years of independence. But, under globalization and liberalization policies of the government, engineering higher education has acquired a new interpretation of increasing credential value, where the degree per sue is more important for securing a high-paying job, primarily in the software and information technology sector. This is reflected in the employment pattern of the graduates with a core engineering background.
Aeronautical Engineering is a branch of core engineering which deals into the design, manufacturing, functioning and maintenance of airborne vehicles such as spacecraft, aircrafts, helicopter and missiles. It belongs to the category of high-tech engineering which conduct research, development, testing, launching and manufacturing of various new air vehicles. The main area of specialization for an aeronautical engineering covers aerodynamics, thermodynamics, celestial mechanics, control systems, propulsion and electronics.
There are number of institutes in India which offers degree and diploma courses in this field. To get admission in this course one has to meet special criteria for admission.Lakhs of students every year give the AIEEE, IIT-JEE examinations which are mainly the entry keys in the colleges.
CAREER:
Aerospace Engineers work in one of the most technologically advanced branches of engineering. They design, construct and test aircraft, missiles, satellites, rockets, spacecrafts and anything that flies. Besides this, they are also involved in researching new materials, engines, body shapes and structures. This job is not just about science, it’s also about creativity. The Indian aerospace industry is growing rapidly but as compared to the Europe or the United States it is small in size. In India one will most likely be employed in government owned enterprises such as ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization), HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.), NAL (National Aeronautics Labs), etc. The new area of opportunities are emerging as many global airlines operators and aircraft companies planning to open their MRO- Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facilities in India.   A lot of prestige is associated with working in these organisations and they attract the top brains in the country.
Someone could also work for airlines like Air India, Indian Airlines, Jet Airways, and KingFisher etc. Openings also exist in civil aviation departments as well as the Indian Air Force.
There is no dearth of opportunities for those who wish to work abroad. In fact, a large percentage of engineers at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration, United States) are Indians. The same is the case with aerospace giants like Boeing, McDonnell Douglas, etc.
FUTURE: Aerospace engineers develop new technologies for use in aviation, defense systems, and space exploration, often specializing in areas such as structural design, guidance, navigation and control, instrumentation and communication, or production methods. They also may specialize in a particular type of aerospace product, such as commercial aircraft, military fighter jets, helicopters, spacecraft, or missiles and rockets, and may become experts in aerodynamics, thermodynamics, celestial mechanics, propulsion, acoustics, or guidance and control systems.
As a trainee, Aeronautical engineer one can earn about Rs. 25,000 or more per month. Research organizations, aircraft developing and manufacturing organizations and other pay around Rs. 15,000 per month to aspirants. If someone gets the opportunity to work with Airlines, he/she can jet start the career with a good remuneration of Rs. 40,000 per month. After a couple of years there is a possibility to earn a handsome amount Rs. 80,000 to Rs. 1, 20,000 per month.  Salary depends upon the experience and knowledge of the field. As per government norms all other facilities are given, It is an advanced branch of engineering, it just does not deals with the science, its all about creativity. One has to both wings to the imagination and makes it fly.
There is a growing demand of efficient engineers in the field. The it is assessed that the future need for this branch of engineering will be large due to a major growth other airline companies day by day, the space research organizations etc.The airline industry is always looking for new aeroplanes that are bigger, better, more economical and off late more environment friendly. That is how the Boeing 707 developed into the 747 and now into the 747-400. But now airlines want new generation planes able to take thrice as many passengers at many times the speed of sound. The race is on to develop this next generation airline. This means that aerospace engineers are a lot in demand. Space is another booming business with the need to launch communication and weather satellites into various orbits. Space vacations may become a reality sooner than we think, thanks to the landmark space flight taken by US millionaire Dennis Tito. Defense as usual is an industry which constantly requires new and better technologies and the Indian private sector is all set to set shop now that the government has thrown open this sector to private participation.
