It’s HTC One against iPhone5 and Samsung Galaxy S3

It's time to shake things up in the smartphone space,' Mike Woodward, President of HTC America said while launching the HTC One in New York on Tuesday.

In a mobile technology world dominated by Samsung and Apple, the race for the third spot has become even tougher with various major mobile companies such as Nokia, BlackBerry, HTC, LG and Sony joining the race. For long, Nokia had been the choice of the people. However, in the world of smartphones, it has fallen behind the two even with the launched of its Lumia series failing to regain the status it once had.

Making the comeback tougher for Nokia is the arrival of HTC, the Taiwan mobile company, in the world. China’s Huawei and ZTE have also joined the race making it even tougher.

However, since its arrival on the scene, HTC has been performing absolutely well and its latest launched, the HTC One or simply called the One, is pitted against Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and Apple’s iPhone 5 by the company and the market pundits.

So, here’s looking at some of the important features of HTC One that could set it up against Samsung Galaxy S3 and Apple iPhone 5.

BlinkFeed:

The HTC One features a BlinkFeed. This feature replaces icons on the home screen with a personalised stream of news articles, social networking updates, photos and video much like the Windows phones used by the Nokia Lumia series. These tiles get updated automatically with information and news from social networking sites and other news sites.

Processor:

Apple has its own operating system and Samsung runs on Google’s Android supporting the Android v4.0 (ICS) OS. HTC One runs on Android 4.1.2 and the 4.2.2 update is already said to be in the process.

However, what the company feels that its latest processor - the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset utilizing a quad-core 1.7GHz Krait 300 processor, Adreno 320 graphics and 2GB of RAM will make it tough for Samsung Galaxy S3 and Apple iPhone 5.

Camera:

The camera is an interesting feature of the HTC One considering that it comes with a 4 MP camera compared to the 8 MP, LED Flash cameras of both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Apple iPhone 5. But wait there. It’s not the end.

The Ultrapixels is what the company calls it. It is larger than the ordinary pixels found in cameras and tends to take up more space on the sensor thus giving a better quality picture. The company says that with the HTC UltraPixel Camera, users will be able to shoot vivid, true-to-life images with a wide range of colors. With the UltraPixel, HTC claims it captures significantly more light than most 8 or 13 megapixel cameras.

Hardware:

HTC One is made of aluminium.

"That's how it all starts," Thomas Chien, one of HTC's vice-presidents of design, is quoted by BBC as he picks up a solid piece of aluminium. Like Apple’s iPhone, it is a metal designed body packed and finished to perfection.

While iPhone 5 comes with a dimension of 23.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm weighing 112 gms, Galaxy S3 comes with a dimension of 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.6 mm weighing 133 gm.

But the HTC One, HTC One with a dimension of 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3 mm and weighing around 143 grams is the thickest and heaviest of the three.

Screen Resolution:

This section is where HTC claims it sets itself apart from Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S3.

Galaxy S3 boasts of a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, 306 ppi pixel density and Gorilla Glass 2 protection. The iPhone 5 also boasts of a 4 inch LED-backlit IPS capacitive touchscreen display with 1136 x 640 pixel resolution, 326 ppi pixel density and Gorilla Glass protection along with oleophobic coating.

Not to be left behind, the HTC One comes with a 4.7 inch screen with a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. And this is what sets it apart, it claims.

The 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution is about 468 pixels per inch (ppi) making it the most clear and powerful screen compared to iPhone 5 which has a screen resolution of 326 ppi.
